The Beurs van Berlage building, once the Amsterdam Stock Exchange was constructed by Hendrik Petrus Berlage for the Municipality of Amsterdam. Work began in 1898 and the building was completed in 1903. Berlage’s goal was to produce a socialist building where all kinds of craftsmen would come together to support the proletarian movement which was gaining power towards the end of the 19th century. The building is now used as an exhibition centre and concert hall.
