The Beth Haim (’The House of Life’) Cemetery is a Portuguese-Jewish cemetery in Amstel. The land was purchased by jewish refugees in 1614, as they needed somewhere to bury their dead, but Amsterdam would not give permission for the establishment of a Jewish cemetary in the city. There are around 27,500 people burried on the site – including many famous physicians, artists and philosophers. The cemetary is undergoing restoration, as the state of the ground means that many of the memorials have sank into the soil.
