The Begijnhof and Chapel is a secluded area, a pleasant change from the nearby shopping street Kalverstraat. There are two churches in the area, the English Reformed Church, and an earlier Italian Catholic one. The area is also well known as the site of the oldest remaining wooden house in Amsterdam – dating back to 1475. The Begijnhof are a Catholic order of single women, living the life of a nun in this small, secluded community.
