The beacon from the Ameland Lighthouse has been skimming the Wadden sea for over 125 years. It began operation on May 10th 1881, and is still standing today, although now the lighthouse watchman has been replaced by electronic sensors and monitoring equipment. The lighthouse, one of the last ones to be designed by Q. Harder, is now open to the public, who can enjoy a tour of the facilities, and the amazing view from the observation level.
