The former Hotel Hartenstein acted as the headquarters of the British 1st Airborne Division during the Battle of Arnhem, now remembered as ’A bridge too far’. Many of those at that battle were killed, wounded, or captured fighting through the strong German opposition, or, after the failure of the assault, trying to hold out on the banks of the Rhine until reinforcements arrived. The Airbone Museum offers tours of the battle site, and holds exhibitions on various aspects of the battle.
